Atrium Health Mercy Hospital - Healing Garden

The Dr. Sanford and Lois Benjamin Healing Garden at Atrium Health Mercy was completed in May of 2015. The garden is adjacent to the emergency room waiting area on the Atrium Health Mercy campus in the Elizabeth neighborhood. Bloc Design transformed Atrium Health Mercy’s former mobile MRI pad area into a relaxing and therapeutic garden space to provide patients and their families a place of refuge and quiet reflection. The space was designed to incorporate intentional and specific elements that aid in the therapeutic benefits to the cognitive, emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects of a person. Some of these elements included an apothecary garden, quotes etched into the walkways, multiple seating areas, basalt column sculpture, and a living donor wall. The space also included an outdoor pergola for seated shade, lush vegetation, and seating, as well as outdoor music and sounds to help mask the urban noise and create a calmer environment.
